District of Columbia Tax Calculator

DC is a federal district, not a state. Its resident individual income-tax schedule has graduated rates from 4% to 10.75%. The calculator below starts with DC taxable income and keeps District tax separate from federal income tax and payroll deductions.

DC Resident Income Tax Calculator

Start With The Right Income

A gross salary, federal adjusted gross income, and DC taxable income are different figures. Prepare the District additions and subtractions and the applicable deduction before entering taxable income. Do not subtract the federal standard deduction automatically: later District tax-conformity changes can differ from the assumptions in earlier planning booklets.

The tool reports tax before credits, the nonrefundable credits you enter and can apply, the estimated District liability, and the marginal rate. Refundable credits, withholding, estimated payments, and previous overpayments are separate parts of a return. An annual liability estimate is not the same as a refund, a balance due, or an instruction to change payroll withholding.

For example, $100,000 of completed DC taxable income produces $6,900 of schedule tax before credits: $3,500 on the first $60,000 plus 8.5% of the remaining $40,000. The highest rate does not apply to every dollar. Changing the income definition makes comparisons misleading even when the rate arithmetic is correct.

Residency And Nearby Jurisdictions

This launch supports full-year resident individuals. It does not decide domicile, allocate part-year residence, prepare nonresident returns, calculate estate or trust tax, or split separate returns on a combined District return. A workplace address alone does not establish that the resident calculator applies. Use the agency instructions to establish the correct return and review home-jurisdiction obligations independently.

Nearby state calculators can help compare clearly defined taxable-income scenarios. They are not residency recommendations, and two jurisdictions may start from different income and deduction rules. Federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any additional payroll deductions must still be considered when estimating household take-home pay.

Verify Before Filing

The selected planning year does not make unpublished deductions or credits final. Keep the income worksheet and credit support alongside the result, then compare against the applicable return instructions. No account or purchase is required; your calculator inputs remain in your browser and are not submitted as a tax return.

Consult the official DC rate schedule, District return forms, and the 2027 published-amounts checklist for final filing and future-year planning. Use the federal bracket calculator for a separate federal estimate.
