How much can I contribute to Roth and traditional IRAs, and how much traditional IRA contribution is deductible?
Coordinate traditional and Roth IRA contributions under one age-based annual limit, compensation limits, separate MAGI tests and workplace-plan coverage rules. The output distinguishes allowable contributions from deductible traditional amounts and shows remaining room after the supplied proposal. A nondeductible traditional contribution is not automatically prohibited, and an excessive proposal is blocked rather than labeled compliant.

How this calculation works
- Apply published 2025 or 2026 age-based annual caps and coordinate Roth/traditional contributions under the same limit.
- Limit contributions by independently confirmed IRA-eligible compensation; joint returns can coordinate spousal earnings and contributions.
- Use separate Roth and deduction MAGI inputs and choose workplace/spouse coverage phaseouts by filing status.
- Apply worksheet $10 upward rounding and the prescribed $200 partial-entitlement floor.
- Block proposals exceeding the combined or direct-Roth limit; report deductible and nondeductible permitted traditional contributions separately.
- Unpublished 2027 indexed numbers use explicitly labeled 2026 provisional baselines, never an official 2027 forecast.
- Default 2026 age-50 covered single contributor with $85,000 deduction MAGI has a $5,160 phaseout deduction cap: a $5,000 traditional proposal is fully deductible, with a separate $2,000 Roth proposal fitting the $8,600 combined cap.
Common mistakes and caveats
- No excess-contribution removal/recharacterization workflow, qualification of compensation, or automatic MAGI worksheet reconstruction.
- Spouse compensation coordination is MFJ-only; the other spouse's age-based cap and contribution eligibility must be verified independently.
- No Saver's Credit or future Saver's Match, state deduction, tax savings computation, or after-age-70-1/2 QCD offset.
- Direct Roth contribution eligibility does not itself determine eligibility or tax cost of a conversion.
FAQ
Are Roth and traditional IRA contribution limits separate?
No. The 2025 combined cap is $7,000, plus $1,000 at age 50 or older. The published 2026 cap is $7,500, plus a $1,100 age-50 catch-up. Eligible compensation can lower either cap. This calculator subtracts proposed traditional contributions when determining coordinated Roth room; the two displayed additional-contribution alternatives cannot both be added independently.
Why are there two different MAGI inputs?
Publication 590-A has distinct traditional-deduction and Roth-eligibility MAGI worksheets. Roth-conversion income is removed for Roth contribution eligibility, but is not generally removed for traditional deductibility or other phaseouts. Enter the independently computed worksheet amounts rather than assuming taxable income, AGI, and both MAGIs are interchangeable. This tool does not reconstruct every worksheet adjustment from income sources.
How do workplace coverage and my spouse affect the deduction?
If neither relevant spouse has workplace coverage, the traditional deduction is not reduced by the workplace-plan MAGI phaseout. A covered joint-return contributor uses the covered-contributor range; a noncovered joint-return contributor with a covered spouse uses the higher spouse-coverage range. Married-separate taxpayers who lived together use the special $0-$10,000 range when coverage applies. Living apart all year has different treatment.
Can a spouse without earnings contribute?
On a married filing jointly return, eligible combined compensation can support the other spouse's IRA, subject to coordination with the first spouse's IRA contributions and each person's own annual cap. Enter actual spouse compensation and total spouse IRA contributions already made or planned. The calculation determines this user's available compensation after that allocation; it does not verify the other spouse's age or independently approve the spouse's proposal.
How are partial Roth limits and partial deductions rounded?
Inside a supported phaseout range, the calculator uses the applicable annual or compensation-limited base and rounds the reduced result upward to the next $10, including the $200 minimum where the worksheets prescribe it. The result still cannot exceed the contribution or compensation limit. At the upper MAGI endpoint the income-based entitlement is zero; one dollar below the endpoint can retain the worksheet minimum.
What happens to a permitted but nondeductible contribution?
Its basis generally must be reported on Form 8606 and affects taxation of future distributions and conversions. This tool shows that portion separately and does not assume it is a Roth contribution or a tax-free conversion. Excess-contribution corrections, Saver's Credit/Match, and QCD offsets from deductible post-age-70-1/2 contributions are excluded. The 2027 option uses explicit 2026 provisional limits until indexing is published.
