How much health insurance can my Schedule C business deduct under Form 7206?
This free Form 7206 calculator checks medical, dental, and vision premiums month by month against subsidized employer-plan eligibility. For one supported Schedule C business, it limits eligible premiums by profit after the deductible half of regular SE tax and same-business retirement deductions. Premium tax credit coordination is blocked instead of claiming the same premiums twice.

How this calculation works
- Total actual monthly premiums, removing months with applicable subsidized employer-plan eligibility.
- Calculate regular SE tax with the selected year's Social Security base and individual wages; respect the regular net-earnings filing threshold.
- Subtract deductible half-SE and verified same-business retirement deductions from Schedule C profit, then cap eligible premiums by the remaining earnings.
- Keep employer-ineligible premiums and earnings-limited premiums separate; do not treat undeducted amounts as an automatic itemized deduction.
- 2027 indexed limits are not presented as published law. The 2027 option uses a labeled 2026 provisional baseline; enacted nonindexed rules are kept separate.
Common mistakes and caveats
- Only one Schedule C business and regular SE method; no S corporation, partnership, multiple-business allocation, clergy, Form 2555, qualified LTC premiums, or tax-excluded public-safety-officer premiums.
- Marketplace premium tax credit and advance-credit interactions are explicitly blocked. A plan not established under the business is also blocked.
- This calculates the deduction, not incremental tax savings or a complete return. Additional Medicare Tax is not part of the deductible half of regular SE tax.
FAQ
Can I deduct premiums when I could enroll in my spouse's employer plan?
Not for a month in which the applicable subsidized employer-plan eligibility disallows the deduction. Eligibility matters even if you did not enroll. The month check includes applicable own, spouse, dependent, or under-27 child's employer coverage.
Why is my profit reduced before calculating the limit?
In the supported single Schedule C case, Form 7206's net-earnings limit subtracts the deductible part of regular SE tax and the same-business deductible retirement contribution. The insurance deduction cannot exceed the remaining earnings limit or eligible premiums.
Does the health-insurance deduction reduce self-employment tax?
No. It is an adjustment on Schedule 1 rather than a Schedule C business expense. The tool calculates regular SE tax before the health-insurance deduction and uses only its deductible half for the Form 7206 limit.
Can I use premiums receiving the ACA premium tax credit?
Not in this version. Marketplace credit and advance-credit cases require a coordinated deduction/credit computation under Publication 974. Selecting that case blocks numeric results; the tool never deducts full premiums and separately credits the same expense.
What if the business had a loss?
A nonpositive earnings limit yields no self-employed health-insurance deduction in this supported model. Premiums not deducted on Schedule 1 are not automatically deductible elsewhere; Schedule A has separate eligibility, itemizing, and medical-expense limits.
Can I use an S corporation, multiple businesses, or long-term-care premiums?
No. Those require different wage, allocation, or age-limited premium rules. This calculator accepts only one Schedule C business, regular SE methods, and medical/dental/vision premiums from a plan established under that business.
